Rose Garden - a local treasure
A calm in the eye of the storm
In May '08 friends received the fantastic news that the garden had been awarded funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery fund for the complete restoration of Herkomers Rose Garden. Hertsmere Borough Council also contributed funding towards the project.
For years the garden of Bushey's foremost artist, Hubert Von Herkomer had been deteriorating with graffiti and litter desecrating what should have been a historic site of local pride.
After two years of endeavour the grand opening in July 2011 promised to be a real celebration - with something for all the community to admire.
The Rose Garden is quiet now, although something still draws the visitor even during the grey Winter months, especially around December. Could it be the calming influence the legacy fo Herkomer has brought with a gift of an oasis in the midst of a community more attuned to commerce and retail than peace and tranquility?
Come along to the Rose Garden, Bushey. Y Flea looks forward to seeing you there!
