Gilded Textiles are back in fashion!
Reviving the art of textiles is a bit of a crusade for Harrow artist Gilda Baron,
and after 20 years teaching her skills to adults in Camden, Gildas patience is about to pay off as she celebrates completion of a new ten-part series Talking Threads on Sky 171 Mychannel screened last October.
Gilda says: The shows looked at different aspects of textile art and what inspires the work.
I didnt go to art school, so I didnt consider myself to be an artist
She explains that her family always had a sewing machine in the house and by the age of 12 she decided to go to technical college to study wholesale dressmaking.
My parents didnt want me to end up working in a factory, Gilda recalls, but I was obstinate and decided to do what I wanted to do.
At 15, Gilda was making sketches for bridal gowns. She went on to teach fashion, and 14 years ago started doing landscapes using batik, appliqué, plus hand and machine stitching.
Gilda is exhibiting regularly now and you'll find listings in our flea events tab at the head fo the page ...
I didnt go to art school, so I didnt consider myself to be an artist but people keep telling me my work is good, so I do think of myself as an artist now.
Gilda makes regular forays to Harrow market on Thursdays to stock up on trimmings.
I have half a dozen pieces on the go at once, I couldnt bear not to be creative.
Take time for a WORKSHOP WITH Gilda this May:
RAINBOW SILKS, High Street, Great Missenden, Bucks.
